The greener grass of home, wherever that might be...
We lived in Spain for eight years, got married and had two great kids, immersed ourselves in the Catalan way of life – the food, the people, the wine... loved (almost) every minute and thought we'd never leave. In the autumn of 2007, a trip to Australia changed everything. We took ourselves on a whistle-stop tour of the East coast, taking in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne on the way. During a 10-day campervan road trip, we really fell in love with the place; the vast open spaces; cooky wildlife and awesome rainforest; the ocean... and came to the realisation that, while Spain does have a lifetime of exploration on offer, an Australian future seems to also promise opportunity. That sense of freedom is basically what this voyage is all about.
On Valentine's Day, 2008, we moved out of our dusty old Spanish stone house into a modern English apartment, back in our native North-East. Apart from giving the kids some extended time with their grandparents, it should give us a chance to brush up on our English culture (and enjoy some decent English salary levels) before we get a permanent Aussie residence visa. For one reason or another, our chances of a visa aren't as good as they might be, and the length of our stay here is far from definite. While the ideal would be to make the move to the Antipodes in September or October – a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see two consecutive summers – this blog should be a testament to exactly how difficult that proves to be.
If the entry to the left was posted at something like 4am UTC, the chances are we finally made it.
